Do you still have Windows 7?
Back in 2009, Microsoft made a commitment to give support for Windows 7 for a 10-year period. After that, Windows 7 will no longer be supported. The specific end date For Windows 7 will be January 14th, 2020. After January, any technical assistance and software updates from Windows Update will no longer be available. Microsoft has recommended to anyone Using Windows 7 to upgrade to Windows 10 before the end of this year.
What does this mean for my small business?
If you're running Windows 7 in your small business after January 14th, 2020, you will no longer be able to receive any security updates. It's extremely important to get a more updated operating system such as Windows 10 to give your small business the latest security updates in order to keep your data safe.
Can I upgrade my existing PC in my small business?
The majority of Windows 7 PC's can be upgraded to Windows 10. You would just need to purchase a Windows 10 license and contact your IT provider to help with the install.
What happens if I continue to use Windows 7?
If you continue to use Windows 7 in your small business, the PC will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to various security risks and viruses. You also won't receive any software updates from Microsoft.
Will I lose my existing data if I upgrade to Windows 10?
Typically when you upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7, the upgrade process is pretty seamless. Users do retain their data and software the majority of the time. There are software programs out there that do not run on Windows 10 and therefore during the upgrade process that software is uninstalled. However, the user does retain all of its documents.
